Graduate Profile - Jane Downey

Jane Downey, Senior Business Analyst at Aspira – MSc Business Information and Analytics Systems

Why did you choose to pursue an MSc in CUBS?

After completing my undergraduate degree and my two-year graduate programme I discovered that I had a very keen interest in software implementation specifically in the area of data analytics. I decided to peruse a masters in Business Information Analytical System to gain a more in-depth understanding of data, a methodology to approach complex business and IT problems and an opportunity to learn more about new applications and programming languages that can advance my career.

What made you decide to come to CUBS?

I completed my undergraduate degree with CUBS and was very impressed with the support from the lecturing team and the department as a whole. If you have any questions, problems or just want to have a discussion the lecturing staff always made themselves available. Also having a dedicated computer lab made studying and carrying out research easier.

How has MSc shaped your future career?

When working in the technology industry things are always changing. From new emerging technology, applications and business challenges we have to consistently change and learn with them. Some information that we learn today may no longer be relevant in years to come.

The MSc. taught me fundamentals how to approach problems and tasks with a logical and analytical mindset. You cannot learn and prepare for every change and problem but you can learn the tools and techniques that will allow you to adapt and create value quickly.

Once I completed my masters I joined a tech-start up and was able to apply the frameworks and tools that I gained in the masters straight away. Later on in my career I joined a consulting company and I am still able to apply the skills that I learnt while adapting to new projects and clients that I work with.

What else has CUBS offered you?

A really great network of friends and colleagues. I was also able to get the opportunity to be a tutor with CUBS during and after my masters. This allowed me to share the knowledge and skills that I had with my peers and help other students with their research and development projects.

Were there any other community events you had a chance to attend while studying?

During my masters we had fantastic opportunities to attend IT events and also having guest lecturers present to us. The top event I attended was with Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, during a tech summit event in Dublin. From our guest lecturers we had a data applications manager from Heineken who gave us a fantastic insight into how data analytics can solve non-IT business problems but also leveraging data to gain a competitive advantage.

What advice would you give to others?

When pursuing a masters I would advise students to select a masters that will help advance your career but also your interests. A Masters can give you a greater understanding and an advanced skill set that can benefit your career in both the short and long term.

Ultimately, you are in the driving seat to get the most out of your masters and I would make sure that you will receive the support and guidance that you will need to make your masters a success.
