WATCH BACK: CUBS International Women's Day Event

A virtual panel discussed the theme of "Embracing Equity for a sustainable society".

At the beginning of the event, Professor Ciara Heavin from the Department of Business Information Systems at CUBS and co-chair of the CUBS Athena Swan Assessment Team, explained the motivations behind the Athena Swan Award and announced the launch of two scholarships targeting professional staff in CUBS in order to support them in underaking the Women in Leadership Programme offered by the IMI in collaboration with 30% Club Ireland.

Following this, the panel discussion commenced with first year BSc Finance students Leah O'Brien and Aine McCormack leading the conversation.

The panel consisted of Dr Mary Favier, Kate Hyde, Anne Sloane and Rebecca Donnellan. You can read more about their profiles below.

Dr Mary Favier, a medical doctor and a principal and senior partner in general practice. She is a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners and a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners. She is a GP trainer and guest lecturer to the Postgraduate General Practice training programme in UCC. She has been president of the Irish College of General Practitioners and a member of the Covid-19 National public health emergency team (Nphet). She has served two four-year terms on the board of the Medical Protection Society, the worlds largest medical indemnity organisation. She writes expert legal reports for medical indemnifiers and the State Claims Agency. She has been a campaigner for reproductive justice and is a founder of Doctors for Choice, Doctors Together for Yes and Start, the Irish abortion providers support group. She is co-Chair of Global Doctors for Choice. She is a provider of early medical abortion in her practice. She works in an area of high urban deprivation in Cork city, Faranree/Fairill, and is a member of Deep End Ireland, a GP advocacy group highlighting the specific health care needs and challenges of those living with social and economic deprivation.

Kate Hyde, CEO at Glencove Group, market leader in small group events in Ireland with 40,000 people on their events annually, Henparty.ie being their best-known brand. Kate holds a number of other business interests across eCommerce & digital. As well as consulting for many Irish SME's. Kate is a member of the Ernest & Young Winning Women European group and sits on DWENs International Advisory Board (Dells Women Entrepreneur Network). Kate has been an Image Entrepreneur of the year finalist plus the first female to secure investment on the first series of Irish Dragons Den and author of 'How to Henparty, the Essential Guide' (Currach Press). Kate bought out her Dragons in 2015. Kate is a passionate mentor for a number of Cork Local Enterprise Offices and sits on the University College Cork Ignite Advisory Board.

Anne Sloane is the IT Senior Director at Stryker for Enterprise Service Delivery. Anne and her team are responsible for enterprise applications across Stryker’s Global Manufacturing and Supply Chain organisation. Having spent 20 years at Stryker in various IT plant, IT Business Partner, Application development, Supply Chain and Service Delivery roles, Anne has worked in both the United States & Ireland and currently resides in Cork. Anne has led numerous global teams and is passionate about people development and continuous process improvement. Anne holds a B.A, degree in Economics & History and a Post Grad in Computer Science, both from UCC. Anne has also attended Harvard Business School as part of the Stryker Advance Leadership program. Stryker is a global med tech company, headquartered out of Michigan, USA and has a large footprint in Ireland with extensive manufacturing and R&D operations.

Rebecca Donnellan is a consulting Managing Director in Accenture Ireland focussed on people and talent transformation programmes within the utilities sector. A B Comm grad of UCC in 2011, Rebecca has had an exciting career which took her across the world including a 4 year stint in the Middle East working in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE. Most recently Rebecca is back living in Cork with her husband Shane and 16 month old daughter Zoe. Rebecca is an active member of Accenture’s I&D network and is extremely passionate about coaching women and men in navigating their individual career journeys.
