The Role of Financial Regulation in Protecting Consumers

Governor Lane addressed the staff, students and guests of CUBS at the event on the 23rd of Feb 2017. The Governor outlined the Central Bank’s approach to fulfilling its consumer protection mandate. He first discussed the underlying theoretical case for regulatory interventions to protect consumers and then describes the institutional framework for consumer protection at domestic and international levels. This was followed by explaining the CBI vision for how the Central Bank can contribute to consumer protection and the methods by which they implement this agenda.  The current priorities for the CBI consumer protection work were highlighted along with a focus on some developments that will influence the nature of consumer protection regulation in the coming years. The speech was followed by a short Q&Q with the audience.
