Laura Quinn, a Commerce student at Cork University Business School at University College Cork, documents her work placement experience as part of her programme at Dell Technologies:
My work placement at Dell Technologies offered me an opportunity to bridge theoretical knowledge gained during my BComm studies with practical applications in a dynamic corporate setting. My coursework throughout my 3 years of study became a compass, guiding me through the web of business intricacies.
Carrying out an internship role during your studies can be a daunting time as for many it is the first time you apply your college studies to real life scenarios. As I transitioned from my role as a full-time student to an intern, I found this to be an eye-opening experience.
The placement highlighted many course modules I had taken over the course of my three years undergoing my BComm studies. Many aspects of managing and leadership, sustainability, effective communication, time management, presentation skills and project management has been present in many courses.
The placement highlighted many course modules I had taken over the course of my three years undergoing my BComm studies. I applied the presentation skills I had learned during the SPEAK workshop that was provided to us during second year. This allowed me to communicate effectively in both a professional setting, when hosting meetings and presenting to board directors, but also on a personal level when networking with other interns and colleges during ERG events. I advanced in my technical skills with the use of all Microsoft 365 material, which was a fundamental part of my college coursework. Finally, I progressed on my time management skills during my placement when managing multiple projects at one time. During my studies, I learned the importance of managing your time efficiently to avoid stress.
As I now relfect in my time at my internship at Dell Technologies, I can recognise the fundamental skills and benefits the Commerce Degree has provided me with.
