As a BSc Accounting student at Cork University Business School (CUBS), University College Cork (UCC), Amy Mulcahy recently completed an 8-week audit internship at KPMG. Here's a quick recap of her experience:
The development days in Dublin gave me a good understanding of the company and its morals and provided me with valuable insights into the different career options within KPMG. I heard from staff working in tax, deal advisory, audit, law, and more! I also was pleasantly surprised when "The Voice" coach Niall Breslin (Bressie) gave a very vulnerable speech about mental health.
Workwise, I was kept busy and given a lot of responsibility and room for growth. I was pushed to step out of my comfort zone but was continuously supported by my team when I needed it. The interesting work I was doing has shown me that I made the right choice by picking the BSc Accounting degree in CUBS, and KPMG at that.
There were lots of on site events during my internship including a walk for charity day, an ice cream day for Down Syndrome Ireland, a leaving lunch for the placement students, and a soccer match versus RDJ law firm. These were lots of fun and allowed me to network widely and connect with KPMG staff and the other interns outside of the office.
The social aspect of KPMG was really good. I have made friendships and network connections I hope will last a lifetime! My fellow interns and the others working at the office contributed to a friendly welcoming atmosphere at KPMG that I couldn't be more thankful for.
For me I always knew I wanted to do accounting in CUBS in UCC but I was unsure whether I would choose working in industry or teaching after my degree. My KPMG internship has shown me how interesting the job is and I definitely see myself in a role at an accounting firm for my career.
I am very excited to see what the future holds!
