Graduate Profile: Emer McGlynn - BSc Accounting

My name is Emer McGlynn and I have just recently completed my BSc Accounting Degree in Cork University Business School at UCC. Upon completion of my undergraduate degree, I decided to pursue a Masters in Sports Management in Catawba College, North Carolina. As I prepared to embark on this exciting journey, I couldn’t help but think of my amazing 4 years at UCC that made this opportunity possible. The experiences and lessons learned during my time at UCC have not only shaped my career path but also prepared me for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

My time in the BSc Accounting programme was both demanding and rewarding. I was challenged academically and given the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of accounting and finance. However, my time at UCC was much more than just academics, UCC allowed me to develop skills that go beyond the classroom. I learned how to work as part of a team, speak in front of large groups confidently and create meaningful relationships with my peers that will last a lifetime. These are skills that I hold in the highest regard and I know that if it wasn’t for UCC giving me the tools to acquire these skills, I would not be in the privileged position I am today to be able to experience studying in the United States. The CUBS faculty are not only knowledgeable but also genuinely invested in my our success. They encouraged us to move outside of our comfort zone and they created an environment that allowed us to be the best students we could be. The accounting cohort being relatively small, allowed for a close community of like-minded individuals which ultimately lead to long lasting professional relationships and personalised academic support.

As I now prepare to transition into my next chapter at Catawba College, I realise that the skills and connections I’ve built during my time at UCC will be invaluable on this new journey. I am excited about the opportunity to blend my knowledge of accounting with my passion for sports, exploring how management principles apply to the dynamic world of athletics. The idea of studying in a new country is both exciting and intimidating, but I am confident that UCC has equipped me with the resilience and adaptability to thrive in this new environment.

While I will without a doubt miss UCC and the friends and connections that I have made , I look forward to forging new relationships and gaining fresh perspectives in North Carolina. This international experience will not only help me grow academically and professionally but will also give me a deeper understanding of the global landscape of accounting and sports management. I can say confidently that I wouldn’t be able to pursue such an exciting opportunity if I had not been a part of Cork University Business School at UCC.
