Programme Description

Combining business subjects with the study of the French language and culture, this degree will equip you with the skills and knowledge to work in a fast-changing global business environment.

The BComm (International) with French will bring your knowledge of French to a near-native standard and will develop the kind of cultural awareness that equips you to operate in a different society. You will also engage with the core areas which allow you to understand how business works.

With these skills, you can follow a number of career paths, whether in Ireland or internationally.

Year 3 of the course is spent studying in a partner university in France, allowing you to internationalise your educational experience and gain skills in personal autonomy and adaptability.

In the BComm (International with French), you will find your own path to an exciting range of work options.

One of the attractions and one of the challenges of the BComm (International) with French is that you will engage with a wide range of subject areas.

You will develop both a quantitative and a qualitative understanding of culture and of business from an international perspective. You will also, of course, learn how to operate between and across languages and cultures, developing at once an enhanced set of communicative and intercultural capacities.

These skills are highly sought by national and international employers.

Study Abroad

The BComm (International) with French includes a full year of study abroad. This year provides the opportunity for immersion in French language and culture, combined with the study of European and international business from a French perspective.

In some of our partner institutions, the year abroad may offer the possibility of a work placement.

The year abroad is supported by the EU Erasmus course, which means you would belong to a Europe-wide network of mobile citizen-students.

Practicalities & Assessment

Your studies will involve a range of different types of teaching and learning, spanning small group classes in language (both written and oral) and courses that combine lectures with tutorials where you can begin to apply the knowledge you acquire.

Language teaching accounts for three contact hours a week and, as your course progresses, you will have the option of studying a range of aspects of French society and culture.

In all of this teaching, you will have plenty of contact with your lecturers.

Assessment

Written exams will take place before Christmas and in May.  Not all modules will have formal examinations.  Many modules use other types of assessment including formal examinations, assignments, essays and other submissions. Assessment will also include oral examinations in language, where you will be able to develop your cultural and, above all, your communicative competence.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate entry requirements:

At Least six subjects must be presented. Minimum grade H3 in French, minimum grade H5 in one subject and minimum grade O6/H7 in four other subjects. English and Irish are requirements for all programmes unless the applicant is exempt from Irish.

Mature students:

Applicants should apply directly through the CAO, include a statment of interest and may be called for interview. Leaving Certificate Maths is recommended.  A H3 in Leaving Certificate French is required (HB3 if presenting pre-2017 Leaving Certificate).   Approximately five places are available on this programme for mature applicants.

Non-EU Candidates

Non-EU candidates are expected to have educational qualifications of a standard equivalent to Irish university primary degree level. In addition, where such candidates are non-native speakers of the English language they must satisfy the university of their competency in the English language. Application Process

EU Applicants: Application to Year 1 of the degree programme is made directly through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Applicants should apply online at www.cao.ie. The normal closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of entry. 

Non-EU Applicants

Mature Applicants:  Application is made through the CAO and the closing date for receipt of completed applications is 1st February of the year of proposed entry.

New Leaving Cert Scale

Revised Common Points Scale for Entry into Higher Education

The revised scale, which has been developed collaboratively by the universities and institutes of technology, builds on the package of reforms announced by the Minister in April, and will apply to students who sit the Leaving Certificate from 2017.

The main features of the new scale are that:

  • it maintains the current alignment between the points awarded for achievement at Higher Level and the points awarded for achievement at Ordinary Level;
  • the difference in the points awarded for each grade varies, reducing the probability that students will achieve the same overall points score. This will help to minimise the allocation of places in higher education by random selection;
  • it will encourage the take-up of Higher Level subjects through the introduction of points for the new H7 grade.
  • it continues to award Bonus Points for Higher Level Maths
