My name is Veyda Brickley and I have just recently completed my Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce International with Hispanic Studies (BSc International Business with Languages) in Cork University Business School at UCC.
Before starting university, I had a strong interest in both business and languages, having studied French and Spanish alongside business-related subjects for my Leaving Cert. When exploring degree options, I wanted a programme that would allow me to develop my business acumen while also deepening my language skills and cultural understanding.
Commerce International with Hispanic Studies at CUBS in UCC was the perfect choice, it offered a well-balanced combination of core business disciplines and Spanish language studies, alongside an Erasmus experience. The idea of studying business while gaining fluency in Spanish and learning about Hispanic cultures really appealed to me.
Looking back on my time in the programme, it was an incredibly rewarding experience. The academic coursework provided a strong foundation in business strategy, marketing, and management, while language modules helped me to develop greater communication skills and improved my confidence in speaking Spanish.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of my degree was my Erasmus year in Barcelona, where I studied at Universitat de Barcelona. Living in such a vibrant, dynamic city while continuing my studies through Spanish was both a challenge and a privilege. Immersing myself in the culture, meeting people from all over the world, and navigating daily life in a second language helped me grow both academically and personally. During my time abroad, I also completed the NetLanguages General Essential Spanish Course (B2 Level) at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, further solidifying my language skills.
For anyone considering this programme, my biggest piece of advice is to embrace every moment, especially the year abroad. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand your perspective, gain a new found sense of independence, and create lifelong memories.
After completing my degree in May 2024, I decided to further continue my CUBS journey by enrolling in the MSc in Information Systems for Business Performance. This degree is a great opportunity for me to use my knowledge from my undergraduate degree to build upon the new learnings I will make in this programme. In the ISBP MsC, I’m really enjoying learning about information systems, data analytics and particularly excited to embark upon my industry thesis project.
Looking ahead, my goal is to pursue a career where I can integrate my business and technical knowledge and my language skills in an international setting. Also, I hope to achieve the next language proficiency level and combine my passion for business, technology, and linguistics.
Commerce International with Hispanic Studies provided me with an incredible academic foundation, cultural exposure, and personal growth. I’m excited for the journey ahead and grateful for everything I’ve gained and continue to gain from my time in CUBS!
Please note the CUBS Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce International programme is now BSc International Business with Languages.
