My Erasmus experience in Spain

Alina Buga is a final year Commerce International student in Cork University Business School. Last year, she spent time studying abroad on Erasmus as part of her Undergraduate degree. Here she tells us about her experience:

"My journey began in the Republic of Moldova, a post-Soviet country, and it led me to the beautiful shores of Ireland. Coming to Ireland as an international student was a pivotal moment in my life, marking my first experience of studying abroad. After dedicating two enriching years to my full-time degree at UCC, I was granted the incredible opportunity to embark on an Erasmus adventure in Málaga, Spain, that would forever redefine my life. Málaga became my home away from home during this transformative year. During that time, I had the opportunity to explore 7 countries in Europe and Africa, as well as immerse myself in the heart of Andalucía, a region that left an indelible mark on my soul. The cultural richness and warm hospitality of Andalucía made my Erasmus experience truly unforgettable.

"Beyond the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cities, my time in Spain allowed me to embark on a personal journey of growth. I seized the opportunity to learn and improve my Spanish, as well as pick up Italian along the way. More significantly, I had the privilege of meeting incredible people who, over time, became like family to me. One of the most unexpected and rewarding experiences during my Erasmus year was discovering the world of Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) sports in Spain. Little did I know that I would become a part of this community, participating in tournaments across Spain and Portugal. It was a journey that not only sharpened my athletic skills but also introduced me to remarkable people who shared my passion. Looking back, that year in Spain stands out as the best year of my life. It challenged me, made me more courageous, and expanded my versatility in ways I couldn't have anticipated. With fluency in 5 languages and the addition of 2 more, I forged connections with friends from all corners of the globe. The beauty of these friendships was that I not only met them during my Erasmus but also had the privilege of visiting them in their home countries, making the world feel smaller and more interconnected.

"While my Erasmus adventure was nothing short of amazing, I was excited to return to University College Cork for my final year. I am honored to participate in the prestigious CUBS Dean's Scholarship program, generously sponsored by Deloitte. This is yet another chapter in my educational journey that would not have been possible without the strong foundation and support I received at University College Cork. As I reflect on my time and the life-changing experiences of my Erasmus year, I am filled with gratitude and nostalgia. These experiences have shaped me into a better person, one who is more open-minded, brave, and adaptable. CUBS UCC has been instrumental in this transformation, providing me with opportunities beyond my wildest dreams. I look forward to continuing my journey here, knowing that the future holds even more promise and growth".
