My name is Ciara Corbett, and I am a final year student in Commerce International with German at Cork University Business School, UCC. One of the main reasons I chose this course was the incredible opportunity to spend a year abroad, which I knew would be a life-changing experience.
I spent my Erasmus year in Regensburg, Germany, studying at the University of Regensburg. The 9 months I spent there were invaluable, not just for improving my language skills but for gaining a deeper understanding of business from a new cultural perspective. The University of Regensburg provided an excellent academic environment, and I was also surrounded by an amazing international community with students from all over Europe.
Regensburg’s central location made it the perfect base for traveling across Europe. From Prague to Frankfurt, every trip offered me the chance to explore new cities, broaden my understanding of European history and culture, and develop my independence. Living and traveling on my own also taught me essential skills like adaptability and problem-solving.
Immersing myself in German culture, from the vibrant Bavarian beer gardens to the famous Regensburg Dult festival, was another unforgettable part of the experience. These moments, along with day-to-day life in Germany, really helped me improve my German language skills and feel more connected to the local community.
I can confidently say that the friendships I made during Erasmus will last a lifetime. This summer, I visited friends I made in Regensburg in Austria and Switzerland, and we already have plans for future trips together. The people I met and the experiences we shared made the whole Erasmus journey so memorable.
One of the highlights of my year was the opportunity to attend various festivals and events, like Munich’s Oktoberfest. These experiences added a lot of fun to the year and made me appreciate the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone.
Overall, my Erasmus year has shaped me both personally and professionally. It has enriched my understanding of German language and culture and broadened my perspective on international business. If you’re considering studying abroad, I highly recommend it! It’s not just about the academics—it’s about the lifelong experiences and friendships that make it unforgettable. Don’t be afraid to embrace new opportunities—you’ll be amazed at how much you grow.
