Cork university Business School will be holding an interactive seminar focused on how to successfully integrate sustainability into business education on September 20th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Aula Maxima.
This seminar will be the first in a series of seminars and workshops intended to provide educators with practical insights into how to embed sustainability into teaching and assessment practices. Aligned with UCC’s vision, the seminar will connect and empower educators to explore teaching practices “that shape a sustainable and inclusive world.”
Attendees of the seminar will be offered the opportunity to join a network of educators interested in sustainability, with the aim of sharing best practice and learning.
Professor Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas, Professor of Marketing and Sustainable Business at British School of Fashion, GCU London who will be speaking at the event said
“Now more than ever, our students demand issues of sustainability and climate change be addressed in their studies. It is challenging to teach in ways that acknowledge the severity of the issues without distressing our students or leaving them feeling hopeless. In my work with UN PRME I have found methods to engage business, NGOs and peers across disciplines to create innovative and impactful in-class activities and assessments for a more positive and sustainable future.”
Dr Stephen McCarthy, lecturer and researcher in information systems at CUBS said:
“Our aim is to create a forum for educators from different disciplines to engage in dialogue around how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be embedded into teaching and learning practices within higher education. Discussions will centre on how educators can involve “students as enquirers" in topics such as climate action, wellbeing, and inclusiveness. Innovative Learning, Teaching and Assessment Methods for SDG inclusion will be showcased in both the presentations and the workshop sessions. It is important to build student competencies in not only learning about the SDGs but applying solutions to the SDG problems. This takes the educator from focusing on the input to moving the focus onto the outputs, to incorporate problem-solving and real-world project-based approaches to tackle sustainability challenges.”
David O'Hanlon - Chartered Work and Organisational Psychologist (PSI) and lecturer in the Department of Organisation and Professional Development at Munster Technological University.
“Team-Based Learning offers a "tried and tested", step-by-step approach for educators who wish to stimulate highly engaged in-class debate and discussion in response to case studies and scenarios. It holds great promise for educators who wish to integrate the topic of sustainability into modules in many disciplines, not just business."
