Graduate Profile: Aidan Hickey - BComm

I'm Aidan, a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) degree at Cork University Business School (CUBS) at University College Cork (UCC). Before enrolling in the Commerce degree at UCC, I completed my secondary education with a strong focus on business-related subjects. Classes in economics, accounting, and business studies sparked my interest in the business world.

Choosing the Commerce programme at CUBS UCC was a well-considered decision. UCC’s reputation for academic excellence and its comprehensive curriculum were major factors. The programme offered a blend of business knowledge and practical skills, which I found appealing. Additionally, CUBS UCC’s strong connections with the business community promised ample networking opportunities and real-world exposure through the six month placement programme in third year. The prospect of studying in a vibrant and supportive academic environment also influenced my choice.

My experience in the Commerce programme was both challenging and rewarding. One of the highlights was the diverse range of modules that covered various aspects of business, from marketing and finance to management and entrepreneurship. This broad range of subjects allows you to make an informed decision in final year when you decide your major. The interactive lectures provided practical insights and enhanced my critical thinking skills. Participating in group projects and presentations helped me develop teamwork and communication skills, which I now use regularly in a professional setting. Another memorable experience was the placement opportunity, which allowed me to apply classroom knowledge in a real business setting and gain valuable industry experience, through doing this I was able to return to PwC on a graduate contract to complete my chartered accountancy exams! Outside of the academic side of college, I spent four years as a committee member on the Commerce society and it was definitely one of the main reasons I enjoyed my time in CUBS UCC as much as I did.

For prospective students considering the Commerce programme at CUBS UCC, my advice is to take full advantage of the resources and opportunities available. Engage actively in lectures and discussions, as they are crucial for understanding complex concepts. Don’t hesitate to seek help from lecturers and peers when needed—they are there to support you. Participate in extracurricular activities and internships to gain practical experience and build your network. One lecturer always said “You're a fool if you leave UCC with nothing but a degree” and I couldn’t agree more! Getting involved in something outside academics will change your college experience!

Having studied commerce in college, I am currently working in PwC’s Deals Advisory on the Corporate Finance team. Over the next three years, I will be focusing on completing my Chartered Accountancy exams. Post-qualification, I plan to travel and explore various sectors within the industry, gaining diverse experiences and broadening my professional horizons. In the long term, I aspire to take on leadership roles and possibly start my own business. The confidence and competence I have developed through my studies at CUBS at UCC have prepared me to face future challenges and seize any opportunities with enthusiasm.
