Students from the Economics Society at Cork University Business School recently had the unique opportunity to visit Government Buildings in Dublin as part of the society’s initiative to bridge academic learning with real-world policymaking.
Hosted by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, the visit included an engaging hour-long meeting in his office. The Taoiseach gave students a personal tour, sharing insights into the art and history of the space, followed by a photo session and a warm exchange of gifts.
A lively discussion followed with the Taoiseach and his economic advisor, Professor Kieran McQuinn, covering a wide range of topics such as Ireland’s political landscape, international affairs—including the situation in Palestine—and reflections on the Taoiseach’s recent visit to the White House.
The group also met with Cork-based TDs Jerry Buttimer, Noel McCarthy, and John Paul O’Shea, who shared their political journeys and encouraged students to take a more active role in public life.
The visit concluded with a private tour of Government Buildings and Leinster House, leaving students with valuable insights into the workings of Irish politics and public service.
