Biography

Mark Mulcahy (MSc, PhD CFA is Professor of Corporate Finance at Cork University Business School (CUBS) where he has expertise in expertise in valuation, governance, venture capital and applied accounting. He teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at University College Cork (UCC), delivering modules in corporate finance, valuation and fixed income securities. Prof. Mulcahy holds first class honours B.Comm. and M.Sc. Degrees and a Ph.D. from the National University of Ireland (Cork).  His qualifications also include a certificate in teaching and learning jointly awarded by the Cambridge Judge Business School, Warsaw School of Economics and IESE and a short course certificate in senior leadership from the Irish Management Institute.

He was appointed Professor of Corporate Finance in 2018 and has served as Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance (two terms), Vice-Dean for Accreditation and Governance and as member of the CUBS board. Previously he was Programme Director of the BSc Finance degree for many years and established the highly successful and industry recognised (by the CFA Institute and CAIA) MSc Finance (Investment and Asst Management) programme. He is a member of Academic Council in UCC and externally he has served as external examiner to the Judge Business School (University of Cambridge), Queens Management School (Queens University Belfast), Adam Smith Business School (University of Glasgow), the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, Strathclyde Business School (University of Strathclyde), The School of Professional Finance (University College Dublin), Ulster Business School (University of Ulster),  and Liverpool Business School (John Moores University).

Prof. Mulcahy also has significant industry experience.  Prior to joining UCC he held senior equity research positions at Prudential Volpe Technology Group and Wedbush Morgan Securities in San Francisco where he was involved in sectoral sell-side technology research, venture financing, IPOs, secondary offerings and mergers and acquisitions for client firms and in senior equity sales roles with Investec in Dublin.  Prof. Mulcahy is a holder of the Islamic Finance Qualification (IFQ), is a qualified Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), and a member of the CFA Institute (since 2000).

Consistent with his industry experience and professional finance qualifications, Prof. Mulcahy places practical, industry relevant and research-led teaching at the core of his teaching approach. He has published award winning case studies and organises an annual research symposium in asset management in conjunction with the Financial Management Association with colleagues at CUBS, University of Cambridge and CUNEF Universidad, Madrid. His research is published in world leading international peer-reviewed journals including the European Journal of Finance, British Accounting Review, British Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Accounting Research, Pacific Basin Journal of Finance, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Health Policy, as well as the Economics Letters, among others.
