Biography
Don Walshe joined the Department of Economics, NUI Cork, in October 2007. Prior to returning to academia, he worked as investment manager in Setanta Asset Management (Canada Life) with responsibility for global asset allocation, interest rate, and foreign exchange strategy. In addition, he managed Setanta's global energy fund, a concentrated equity portfolio.
Since joining Goodbody Stockbrokers as Senior Economist in 1998, Don has gained broad and practical experience of international financial markets from both the sell-side and as a fund manager. He remains a registered stockbroker and has a strong research interest in international capital markets, in particular, the measurement of international risk premia. He graduated from NUI, Cork in 1996 with a MA. Economics and lectured Economics in the University of Limerick until 1998.
Research Interests
My research interests lie in the areas of macro-finance, financial regulation and financial crises. Specifically, I am interested in all aspects of the relationship between financial markets and the real economy. This research area has significant policy applications in the areas of financial regulation and systemic risk management. The current global financial crisis has generated renewed interest in this important area of research.
My research collaborations extend to both the public and private sector. I continue to collaborate with the Central Bank and Financial Services Authority of Ireland (CBFSAI) in conducting empirical analysis on newly collated financial data series. This work also involves colaberation with analysts from the European Central Bank (ECB).

Teaching Interests
- I am interested in creating a learning environment whereby students gain the courage to extend their perspective beyond grading and certification and explore their professional development potential.
- Specifically, I focus on students' application of learning through writing, presenting, empirical research, team work and problem-solving. Constant reflection on how best to integrate professional practitioner experience with student learning is a key driver of my teaching innovations.
- I am an avid user of technological teaching aids such as Blackboard and other Internet-based resources (e.g. Economics Blogs and Webex) and continue to adapt these innovations to my teaching.
- In the case of financial markets analysis, I have helped develop additional resources such as mock trading platforms and dedicated financial markets media etc., all of which help students to develop and apply their learning.
- I am an avid user of technological teaching aids such as Blackboard and other Internet-based resources and continue to adapt these innovations to my teaching.
- As the bulk of my teaching relates to final year and post-graduate students, I have a high degree of flexibility in developing the curriculum for these modules. While recognising that there are core concepts that need to be presented, these are supplemented with applied financial market understanding that I have gleaned as a stockbroker and investment manager.
- I place particular emphasis on effective decision-making under uncertainty using a combination of classic theory and cutting edge application. Applying the writings of J.M.Keynes, Hyman P. Minsky, Nassim Taleb, and others to the recent financial crisis is a good example of this approach.
