Biography

Dr. Bernadette Power is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Business in the Department of Economics, Cork University Business School (CUBS). She holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Economics and Finance, University of St. Andrews awarded in 2005, which focused on the survival of small businesses in Scotland. Her research expertise lies at the intersection of business economics, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.

With a prolific publication record, Dr. Power's work appears in prestigious journals such as the International Small Business Journal, Urban Studies, Managerial and Decision Economics, Review of Industrial Organization, The European Journal of Finance, The International Journal of the Economics of Business, Energy Policy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Renewable Energy and more. She recently co-edited the Edward Elgar Handbook of Research on Entrepreneurship and Conflict and has many published chapters in books. Her research excellence has been recognized through many national and international accolades, notably the Transeo Academic Best Paper Award from the European Association for SME Transfer.

Dr. Power has demonstrated consistent success in securing competitive funding from organizations including the EPA, SEAI, IRC, and Enterprise Ireland. Her insights have been shared at various policy forums, ranging from the Welsh Economic Assembly to the National Energy Research and Policy Conference 2022, showcasing her ability to bridge academic research with practical policy implications.

Internationally, Dr. Power is actively involved in collaborative projects. She is lead Irish partner on Users International Energy Agency’s TCP- Social License to Automate 2.0 project, a transdisciplinary taskforce to understand the role of gender and diversity factors in energy consumption with partners from Austria, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. She also was appointed to the International Energy Agency’s WIND TCP Task 28 on the Social Science of Wind Energy Acceptance as the Irish partner where international experts across the globe synthesize current research, identify and address knowledge gaps and advance the dissemination of information to influence policy on renewable energy acceptance which is key to attaining affordable and clean energy globally.

Dr. Power's commitment to advancing the field of economics and business sustainability extends beyond her research and teaching. As an executive committee member of the Irish Society for Women in Economics, she champions the visibility and empowerment of women economists in Ireland, promoting diversity in the field.

She is actively shaping the business leaders of tomorrow as Programme Director for the new MSc in International Sustainable Business in CUBS. She has also pioneered a peer-assisted learning initiative to support first-year Economics students' transition to university life. Her dedication to teaching excellence is evident through her continuous professional development, having completed PCTLHE, PDTLHE, and MATLHE qualifications and her recent appointment as Teaching Fellow to Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and learning (CIRTL), UCC.
