Biography
Dr. Bernadette Power is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Business in the Department of Economics, Cork University Business School (CUBS). She holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Economics and Finance, University of St. Andrews awarded in 2005, which focused on the survival of small businesses in Scotland. Her research expertise lies at the intersection of business economics, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.
With over 25 years of experience in teaching, examining, and leading programmes, she is known for delivering high-quality, research-led education. Her teaching encompasses all levels from undergraduate to executive education, extending beyond her research specialties. She has created over 25 distinct modules, demonstrating her adaptability and dedication to higher education.
With a prolific publication record, Dr. Power's work appears in prestigious journals such as the International Small Business Journal, Urban Studies, Managerial and Decision Economics, Review of Industrial Organization, The European Journal of Finance, The International Journal of the Economics of Business, Energy Policy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Renewable Energy and more. She recently co-edited the Edward Elgar Handbook of Research on Entrepreneurship and Conflict and has many published chapters in books. Her research excellence has been recognized through national and international accolades, notably the Transeo Academic Best Paper Award from the European Association for SME Transfer.
Dr. Power has demonstrated success in securing competitive funding from organizations including the EPA, SEAI, IRC, and Enterprise Ireland covering areas such as the circular economy and community acceptance of renewable energy. Her insights have been shared at various policy forums, ranging from the Welsh Economic Assembly to the National Energy Research and Policy Conference 2022, showcasing her ability to bridge academic research with practical policy implications. She has supervised many PhDs to completion.
She is actively shaping business leaders as Programme Director for the new MSc in International Sustainable Business in CUBS. She has pioneered a peer-assisted learning initiative to support first-year Economics students' transition to university life. Her dedication to teaching excellence is evident through her continuous professional development, having completed PCTLHE, PDTLHE, and MATLHE qualifications and her appointment as Teaching Fellow to the Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL), UCC.
Internationally, Dr. Power is involved in collaborative projects. She was lead Irish partner on the International Energy Agency's USERS TCP "Social License to Automate 2.0," a transdisciplinary taskforce to understand gender and diversity factors in energy consumption with partners from Austria, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. She was appointed to the International Energy Agency's WIND TCP Task 28 on "Social Science of Wind Energy Acceptance" and is actively involved in IEA WIND TCP Task 62 on "Social Science to Support Wind Energy Planning and Participation" where global experts synthesize research, identify knowledge gaps, and advance information to influence policy on renewable energy acceptance.
Dr. Power's commitment to advancing economics and business sustainability extends beyond her research. As an executive committee member of the Irish Society for Women in Economics, she champions the visibility of women economists in Ireland promoting diversity in the field.
