Biography

Dr. Stephen McCarthy is a lecturer and researcher in information systems at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. His research centres on three areas: (i) shared understanding and control in systems development, (ii) the design of human-centred IT, and (iii) the 'dark sides' of technology use (e.g., smartphone addiction). Stephen has published articles in leading peer-reviewed journals such as Information Systems Journal, Internet Research, Information Technology & People, Computers in Human Behavior, and the Journal of Cleaner Production. He is also a recipient of the UCC President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and Researcher of the Year Award (Early Career) from the College of Business and Law.

Stephen serves as an Associate Editor for Communications of the Association for Information Systems, the Journal of Decision Systems, and as a Guest Editor for the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. He has regularly presented and acted as an Associate Editor at premier conferences in the IS field including the International Conference on Information Systems, Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science, and European Conference on Information Systems. Stephen currently serves as a co-director of the MSc Business Analytics programme at Cork University Business School, UCC and is Treasurer/Secretary of the Special Interest Group on Decision Support and Analytics (Association for Information Systems).

In terms of collaborations, Stephen has been involved in projects to the value of 1 million, working with organisations such as IBM, Laya Healthcare, the Health Service Executive (Ireland), the Danish Board of Technology, Missions Publiques (France), and Strategic Design Scenarios (Belgium). He continues to be involved in IS projects funded by the European Commission and has previously worked on Science Foundation Ireland, and Enterprise Ireland funded projects. Stephen is also a visiting academic at the University of Agder, Norway and a guest lecturer at Amsterdam UMC/Vrije University, Netherlands and University of Münster, Germany. He holds a PhD and Masters degree from the National University of Ireland, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
