Activities

CSEL members are engaged in a range of academic activities that foster a positive academic culture and promote quality in research-led education. This involves CSEL academics attending conferences, applying for research grants, organising clinics and running visiting speaker seminars. Research by CSEL members is regularly presented at internal seminars and national and international conferences.

Our members aim to collaborate with a range of external bodies and continue to forge meaningful relationships, both locally and internationally. This includes colloborating with Sport Ireland, The Department of Sport, the state broadcaster - RTE, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), OPTA Sports, Compecon, the Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII) and Leading Sport.

Several members of CSEL are also active members of professional associations such as the International Association of Sport Economists (IASE) and the European Sports Economics  Association (ESEA).

Workshop & LAW CLINIC

CSEL hosts an annual workshop in sports economics. This event began in 2015 and has brought a range of speakers from international universities to UCC. In 2016, an Irish Research Council New Foundations award funded this event. Previous themes for the workshop have included sports demand and sports gambling.

The CSEL Sports Law clinic also began in 2015 and addresses legal standards and professional ethics in sport. Its aims to help in raising awareness about the minimum standards of regulation in the sports field. In collaboration with experienced academics, students work on specific sports-related legal issues such as doping, governance, and disciplinary proceedings in a wide range of sports including rugby, athletics, soccer, GAA and boxing.

Consultancy

CSEL members have also conducted many consulting projects across a broad range of sports and continue to make academic contributions to sports policy formation. Their range of external engagement includes working with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) Football Research Group, GAA and Cork Racecourse. A key mission of CSEL to is to continue to have a positive impact on stakeholders in sport by producing evidence-based research from which they can form judgements.

Media

CSEL members regularly appear in the national and international media. Previously, CSEL members have featured across the print media in outlets such as the Irish Independent, Irish Examiner, Sunday Independent, The Times (UK), Irish Times and Sunday Business Post. CSEL members have made various radio and television appearances on shows such as to RTE Six One News, RTE Investigates, RTE Radio One, the RTE Champions League programme, Newstalk, Today FM and BBC Radio. In addition, CSEL members have presented on sports topics at media and communication events such as the Public Relations Institute of Ireland annual conference.
